With a recurring historical theme of Cistercians caring for their environment, the Kopua Cistercian Associate community, having just celebrated the 20th year of their formation, are supporting the monastic community to restore a wetland on its grounds.
Father Nicho’s response to the idea when it was first presented in 2021 was: “Last night at supper I put the ‘habitat restoration’ idea to the Community and they all supported…(the)… creative plan. It would greatly benefit Monks, Associates and Companions in their ‘monastic-contemplative’ journey!”
The aims of the project are to enhance the biodiversity of bush and wetland on unfarmed land enriching the experience of those on the walking trails. Also to develop a wider collaboration with other groups to support this project with their manual labour which has always been an important part of the Cistercian Charism.
Associates and their supporters have looked to coordinate with other groups interested in supporting this development and continue to hold working bees. Please contact us on our website www.kopuacistercianassociates.nz if you or your group would like to assist.
